Dump your data … see the weeds and junk …and errors ….

I talk to a number of independent Jobbers and very few dump their data from Exploris to excel ( of course to many jobbers don’t know how to use Excel which is a real shame )

Once you get your data into Excel you can see the problems that typically sort to the top or bottom of the sheet.   This takes practice and finding out how to do it wrong.  Like everything else in life that you value.

Remember to guess ( at first ) and keep your data dumps to approx 30,000 to 50,000 records … once you cross that thin line the data just goes  BANG … and you wasted your time.  ( see example of software that goes BANG and quits in image below )

 

Want to try the report generator … do the standard Inventory Info dump first ..that can go to preview or to excel as an export ( for years I preferred the preview and saved as ‘data only’ …once you try the other options you will see why.

So what do you see:

-how many obsolete items you have in stock ( sales class of 9.x )

-how many ‘questionable’ parts with blank PN codes, blank sales class, in Canada sales class with no decimal ( e.g. 8.0 )

-how many parts that are replaced by something else ( data shows in desc #2 )

Go on –you need a good dump now and then… have some fun and see what is happening. And since you are there – see how many thousand part numbers you can flush from your system … omg …. time to weed the garden …
